Five small caviar tins arranged in a row on dark wood, a single open tin at the front

Why we built The Ritual

The Ritual is seven 30g tins of Osetra caviar, plus 100g of butter caviar, shipped together in one box for $479. It's our bestselling product. Here's why it exists.

This isn't a marketing piece. It's a short account of the product thinking — what we saw in the customer data, what we built around it, and why the economics work the way they do. If you're trying to decide whether The Ritual is for you, this should answer the question more honestly than a product page can.

What we noticed

In our first months of operation, we watched a small group of customers do something unusual. They'd buy a single 30g tin of Osetra. Two weeks later, they'd buy another. Two weeks after that, another. The pattern didn't look like people buying for occasions — it was steady, repeat, almost scheduled.

When we asked a few of them what they were doing with the caviar, the answers were consistent. They ate it on Sunday mornings with scrambled eggs. Every week. One 30g tin between two people. It had become a standing part of their weekend.

None of them described it as special-occasion food. It was just what they had for Sunday breakfast — the way other people might have pancakes or bagels.

The friction in what they were doing

Buying a single tin every two weeks had problems we could see, and problems the customers were telling us about.

The cost per tin was higher than it needed to be. A 30g Osetra tin at $95 includes overhead — packaging, ice packs, overnight shipping. Ship one tin, ship seven tins, the fixed shipping cost is largely the same. We were effectively charging our best customers a shipping premium every single time they ordered.

The cognitive overhead was another issue. Every two weeks, our customers had to remember to reorder, confirm their address, wait for the shipment, figure out when to be home to sign for it. For a product that had become routine in their lives, it required too much active management.

And the freshness window wasn't a problem. An unopened tin keeps 4 weeks refrigerated. Seven tins eaten across seven weeks fit comfortably inside that window, especially since each tin stays sealed until its morning.

What we built

The Ritual solves all three. Seven 30g tins of Osetra, plus a 100g jar of butter caviar, shipped in a single box, packed for one overnight transit. The customer pays shipping once, handles one delivery, has seven weeks of weekly caviar in the fridge.

We added the butter caviar — a spread of butter blended with crushed caviar — because it gave customers a second, complementary format. On days when they wanted the classic tin experience, they had the seven tins. On days when they wanted caviar without the ceremony, they could spread a thin layer of butter caviar on toast. It extended the weekly range without adding complication.

The box itself is plain. No ribbon, no gold foil. We thought about making it fancier and decided against it — the customers who were already doing this weekly didn't want their routine dressed up. They wanted it systematised.

The pricing logic

Seven 30g tins of Osetra, priced individually, would cost $665. Plus the 100g butter caviar at $39. That's $704 if a customer bought everything à la carte. We priced The Ritual at $479 — a $225 saving, or about 32% below the sum of parts.

The saving isn't marketing maths. It reflects actual operational savings. One box packed, one box shipped, one customer service touch, one signature. Bulk packing of seven tins is materially cheaper than packing seven separate shipments. The saving is real, and we pass most of it to the customer.

This also changes the effective cost per serving. A single 30g tin of Osetra at $95 is $3.17 per gram. Inside The Ritual, each 30g tin is effectively $62.70 — $2.09 per gram. For a regular weekly eater, the difference adds up to meaningful money over a year.

We're aware this is still expensive. $479 is not grocery money. But for a customer already buying Osetra weekly, The Ritual is the same caviar at a lower price per gram, with one delivery instead of several.

Who it's actually for

The honest version: The Ritual is for someone who already knows they like caviar, eats it regularly or wants to, and prefers Osetra. It's not a first-time purchase. Anyone buying caviar for the first time should start with The Introduction — three small tins of different species, which lets you learn what you like before committing.

If you've had caviar a few times, know you like Osetra specifically, and want to build it into a weekly habit rather than an occasional splurge — The Ritual is the product we built for you.

If you want variety across species or are buying to entertain a group of guests, The Table is the better fit — four species in larger tins for hosting.

Why we called it The Ritual

The name was our attempt to be honest about what the product does. "Subscription box" would have been accurate but transactional. "Weekly caviar" would have been descriptive but flat. "The Ritual" acknowledges that what we're selling isn't just seven tins of food — it's the shape of someone's Sunday morning, repeated across weeks.

This isn't a claim we invented anything. The weekly eating pattern predates us by several centuries — we wrote about the Caspian tradition of eating caviar regularly as ordinary food, not occasion food. What we built is a product format that makes that tradition more accessible to people who live in modern cities and don't have a fishmonger at the end of their road.

That's the whole story. We saw customers doing something, understood what they were doing, and built a product that made it easier and cheaper. The rest of what people write about caviar is frequently theatre. This isn't.

One last note

We're building a subscription version of The Ritual for 2026 — monthly delivery, same format, with locked-in pricing for founding subscribers. If that's something you want to know about when it launches, email us at info@justcavi.com with "Ritual subscription" in the subject line. We'll add you to the early-access list.
